Who Is Jesus? His Identity in Us - Church Membership Online

Updated: Jun 23, 2023

“Who are you?” they asked Jesus. Jesus answered, “I am exactly who I told you at the beginning. There is a lot more I could say to condemn you. But the one who sent me is truthful, and I tell the people of this world only what I have heard from Him.” John 8:25-26

There are times when we sit down and wonder about who Jesus really is. Questions come to mind: What is He like? Where did He come from? What does He do? Is He the real deal? Has He lived up to our expectations? Is He who we think He is?

For some, Jesus is a figure from the past, someone to admire as an exceptional teacher. For others, He is someone to turn to in times of crisis, believing He can wipe away our tears. It cannot be denied that no other figure in history is as well-known as Jesus. Many people think they know Jesus, but in reality, they only have opinions based on their own experiences and impressions from family, friends, articles, social media, and church.

The disciples who were with Jesus witnessed His extraordinary claims for many years. They knew He claimed to be the Way, the Truth, and the Life and that no one could come to the Father except through Him. These claims would have been arrogant if they weren't true. His authority was so apparent that even the Jewish temple guards confessed, "No one has ever spoken like this man!" (John 7:46). Then, there were the amazing miracles He performed, showing His power over disease and nature. He calmed storms, changed water into wine, and raised others from the dead, just to name a few. If someone could do all this, then there is no other explanation except that He is God.

We have all experienced days when we long to see Jesus at work, needing a miracle, and seeking answers to our questions. But sometimes, we may feel like He is missing when our miracles do not occur. This is the time to refrain from frantic searching and instead come to a halt, lean into Him, and tune in to His heart by listening closely. Consider that the intensity you feel may be your soul's way of calling out to Him. Focus on God's presence, fix your eyes upon Him, let Him hold your hand, and allow yourself to be captivated by His boundless affection and mercy.

So, we come back to the question, "Who is Jesus?" This inquiry holds significant value, and each individual must address it. Our response determines how we receive Jesus and His teachings, and our perspective on Jesus determines our ultimate fate. We either worship, adore, rely on, and pursue Him as the world's Redeemer, or we regard Him as unimportant. There is no in-between.
